text from competition…
The purpose of this competition is to gather ideas for a research and conference center, extending and elaborating the core of the graduate program at The Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University. ICAR seeks to develop theory, practice, and research to address and resolve protracted identity-based conflicts. All activities at Point of View will be expected to contribute to the development of the field of conflict analysis and resolution, and in the process, provide a context and services, which support the resolution of deeply rooted conflicts.
This will be a place for teaching and training expert practitioners. It will also contribute to the development of the pedagogy of conflict resolution training itself, offering new models, which reflect attention to culture and identity. Spaces are to be provided for workshops to provide tools to practitioners who work to resolve conflicts across both public and private arena.
Research at POV will be a component of the practice of conflict resolution; interventions aimed at interrupting cycles of violence, reducing polarization across groups, and promoting stakeholder engagement will function as the context for research on those practices. Also, because POV will be a place for real-time conflict resolution, practice is a central feature of POV activities. Students, faculty, and other conflict experts from the Washington area will come together to provide conflict resolution services to groups needing facilitation, mediation, stakeholder assessment, collaborative processes, problem-solving workshops, dialogue, and a host of other services core to the transformation of deeply-rooted conflicts.
The competition is open to students, academics and design professionals. As an ‘ideas’ competition this process will seek creative responses to the guiding principles listed above. Competition participation and submission is available to architects, landscape architects, designers, students, design instructors, conflict resolution academics and any team of collaborators there of. Registration may be made as an individual or as a team.
